Former Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for Levant Affairs and Special Envoy for Syria. Senior Fellow in the Hudson Institute’s Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East. He served 26 years as a U.S. Army officer, with his final assignment as Senior Director for Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon on the National Security Council staff. He also directed the Army’s Operation Iraqi Freedom Study Group.
